This sounds too good to be true, right? Well, you’re wrong! This is 100% real and legit! TELUS International is looking for English linguists from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa to join its Accents Data Collection – Linguistic Revision Project. This remote, part-time opportunity allows you to work from the comfort of your home while earning competitive pay and helping improve speech recognition technology.
So, what is this project about?
The TELUS Digital (TIAI) Accents Data Collection Project is designed to ensure accuracy and naturalness in English speech data used to train artificial intelligence (AI) systems. As a Linguistic Reviewer, you’ll listen to short audio recordings (around 30 seconds each) and carry out the following:
- Identify the accent and native language of each speaker.
- Verify and correct transcriptions for grammatical and spelling accuracy.
- Assess whether each task follows project instructions.
- Report issues such as background noise or unclear audio.
- Annotate emotions (e.g., happy, sad, angry) and non-verbal cues (like laughter, coughs, or pauses).
- Correct timestamps to ensure speech aligns with transcriptions.
Each task takes approximately 2.5 minutes to complete, and tasks are available on an almost daily basis. The project was opened 5 days ago for application, but was meant to have started in August. This means if you apply and are shortlisted, you stand a chance of working at the rate of $17.88 (around N25,000) per hour between October and December. You are likely to work between 2 to 4 hours daily depending on whether you are shortlisted, and this is a good thing. Imagine earning N100,000 daily in Nigeria for 2 or 3 months!
Requirements and Qualifications
To qualify for this project, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a native English speaker from South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, or Kenya
- Currently live in one of the above countries
- Be 18 years or older
- Have a linguistic background (education or professional experience)
- Pass the English Fluency Test and Transcription Test
- Own a computer or laptop with a stable internet connection
If you meet these requirements, you’re already halfway there! This is a freelance opportunity; you’ll work independently and on your own schedule.
